TORONTO, ON – An alleged street race on Thursday night led to a fiery multi-vehicle wreck near downtown Toronto that left at least three people injured, according to Global News.
Toronto Police said the events unfolded on the Gardiner Expressway at Fort York Boulevard, near the city's Niagara neighborhood. It was first reported at about 7:30 p.m.
An investigation thus far indicates that as many as four vehicles were racing on the eastbound lanes when a driver of one of the vehicles, a Mercedes, lost control. The vehicle then hit the back of an uninvolved vehicle, which then caused two other vehicles to be impacted.
The impact of the crash caused the striking Mercedes to catch on fire and eventually become engulfed in flames and heavy smoke, as shown by images and videos captured at the scene.
On Friday morning, the following day, authorities confirmed that two people were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries, while a third patient was medically evaluated at the scene before being released.
As of this writing, no arrests or pending charges have been reported, but at least one person from the Mercedes is believed to have fled the scene on foot before first responders arrived.
