TORONTO, ON – A two-vehicle collision Saturday morning, January 20, in Toronto's Lower Don Lands area claimed the life of an 18-year-old driver whose Jeep crashed into the Don River, reports CBC.
Toronto Police responded to the scene off eastbound Lake Shore Boulevard East, just past Cherry Street, at around 8:43 a.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the young man was operating a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound on Lakeshore Boulevard East, west of the Don Roadway, at the same time a 32-year-old man was driving a 2023 Ford F150 pickup truck eastbound on Lakeshore East, just east of Cherry Street. At one point, the teen driver lost control of the Jeep, which hit the Ford. The impact sent the Jeep off the roadway and down into the Don River.
Crews were able to extract the Jeep from the water at 12:24 p.m., but were not able to immediately locate the driver. By 1:12 p.m., personnel recovered a person, believed to be the teen, from the same portion of the river. The teen and the other driver were both transported to an area hospital with life-threatening and minor injuries, respectively.
The teen was later pronounced deceased.
Authorities said that following the attempted rescue operation, one firefighter received medical attention at the scene.
An investigation into the fatal incident remains open and ongoing.
