Birth Injury Symptoms

Birth injury cases each manifest in particular and unique ways. Some symptoms of birth injury in Toronto may be more obvious and easy to tell, other may be more unique. Infants often sustain one of the two types of injuries, either brain injuries or bodily injuries. Brain injuries are sustained from a variety of causes, which range from negligent management of Neonatal blood chemistry to failure to administer Cesarean section in the context of maternal hypertension at the time of delivery.

Bodily injuries can encompass everything from biomechanical injuries to laceration or wounding, leading to lifetime scarring or disfigurement. There is no way in which either type of injury occurs that would be described as typical. To best make sense of the symptoms present in birth injuries in Toronto and how to pursue a claim from there, it is essential to work with a compassionate injury lawyer.

Indica of Injury

Generally, parents realize that a child has suffered from a birth injury either at the time of the birth, when they become aware that there has been some complication in the process of delivery, or if they see the emergence of significant deficiencies in the process of the child’s normal, anticipated birth and development. It may become clear that the child was not functioning as would normally be suspected, which will cause the parents to scrutinize what may have occurred during the delivery process, regarding symptoms that may be immediately present.

One of the major indicia of a birth injury in Toronto is when a baby is not getting enough oxygen because of an error occurring in the delivery process. Oxygen is absolutely crucial for neonatal brain function. Any error in the delivery process that deprives the newborn of that oxygen they may need in the crucial first few minutes of life could have effects decades into the future.

Cognitive Development

Symptoms of Toronto birth injury that may not become apparent until later usually have to do with the child’s cognitive development. A child’s inability to progress through early education as a result of the deficit in their cognitive and endurance level of functioning may cause parents to question whether there were any errors in the delivery process or in the treatment the mother may have been receiving while the child was in utero.

A case that presents these circumstances requires complex analysis of causation, specifically attributing the child’s  manifest difficulties and other symptoms that become apparent in the child’s life to an error that occurred either during the delivery or the treatment the mother received while the baby was in utero.

Cerebral Palsy

Birth injuries can result in the manifestation of cerebral palsy due to oxygen deprivation during or just after the birthing process. It is oxygen deprivation to the child’s brain during these critical moments that can lead to cerebral palsy. There are instances where parents have witnessed their children turning blue from lack of oxygen. This is a very significant indication of risk for cerebral palsy. The other symptom that may lead to discovery of cerebral palsy is seizure activity in the birthing process. Cerebral palsy reflects the injury to the infant’s neurological system and nervous system.

Erb’s Palsy

Erb’s palsy refers to a muscular and neurological disorder in the upper children’s arm area. Birth injuries may result in the manifestation of Erb’s palsy when there is a biomechanical injury to the baby during the birthing process. For example, symptoms that may indicate that a child may be suffering from Erb’s palsy would be if there was compression, dislocation, distortion, or adverse disposition of the baby’s shoulder and arm during the birthing process. This biomechanical abnormality may be a symptom of the child suffering from Erb’s palsy and may be enough to pursue a Toronto birth injury claim.

Vacuum Extraction

Vacuum extraction is when a healthcare provider, being a nurse or a doctor, applies the vacuum, which is a soft or rigid cap with a handle, and vacuum pumps the baby’s head to help guide the baby out of the birth canal.

This is typically done during a contraction when the mother is pushing and the labor is not progressing properly, or where the baby’s health depends on an immediate delivery. Vacuum extraction poses a risk of injury for both mother and baby.

Some of the risks are that it may cause tearing and wounding to the mother. In terms of the risks to the baby, they include scalp wounds, skull fracture, or bleeding within the skull. With that, there is also a high risk of getting the baby’s shoulders stuck after the head has been delivered. This can lead to an injury to a network of nerves sending signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand, or even fractures or injuries to the collarbone, in particular.
