Derek Abreu joined the Preszler team in March 2020 and practices as Counsel to the firm. He was previously a 10-year Partner at an established downtown Toronto law firm, recognized as one of Canada’s Top 10 Insurance Litigation boutiques. He has earned a reputation as a strong and fearless advocate in the courtroom, having been involved in arguing some of the leading litigation cases in the industry. As counsel in over 45 reported decisions, Derek has represented his clients successfully at all levels of court in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta, including not only trial work but also appeals. He has appeared as counsel in matters before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada.
Derek’s practice focuses on complex matters involving institutional abuse claims, long-term disability claims, catastrophic injuries involving brain injury, spinal cord injury, and psychiatric disorders, and premises liability claims. He balances a sensitivity in dealing with victims and injured persons, with an aggressive advocacy approach where he pushes for the best results for his clients through negotiated settlement or trial when necessary.
