Serving Survivors: A Documentary
Serving Survivors features Jeffrey Preszler and Joseph Fearon discussing their work as advocates for survivors of childhood sexual abuse and institutional abuse across Ontario. With a focus on how each attorney began helping victims and the legal process that followed, this short film discusses people who were harmed by someone in a position of trust, authority, or dependency, particularly within an institutional context.
Unlike ordinary legal files, Preszler Injury Lawyers strives to reflect the care and responsibility that are involved in working with survivors. For many people, speaking about abuse can be painful, frightening, or tied to years of silence. The decision to pursue a civil claim may come after a long period of trying to understand what happened, being disbelieved, and discovering what accountability could look like.
Serving Survivors also helps explain what the civil claims process may look like for survivors who want to take legal action against an institution or organization connected to their abuse. These cases often require careful listening, investigation, record gathering, legal strategy, and an understanding of how an institution may have failed to protect vulnerable people.
At its core, Serving Survivors is about trust. It was created to demonstrate how Preszler Injury Lawyers approaches this work with empathy, preparation, and deep respect for each survivor’s experience.
