Torn tendons and ligaments can cause extreme pain. Injuries to connective tissue can severely affect peopleโ€™s ability to participate in their day to day life activities. Many times, connective ligament damage occurs near a joint such as a knee. When the ligaments around that joint are damaged, the injured person will experience pain every time he or she moves that joint. Everyday movement, along with car accidents, slip and falls, sports injuries, and work-related injuries, can cause tendon and ligament injuries.

If you have suffered from torn ligaments as a result of an accident, we can help. At Preszler Injury Lawyers, we understand how painful torn ligaments and tendons can become. Living with chronic pain can make it hard to engage in everyday activities that you love. If your torn ligament injury occurred as a result of an accident, you might be entitled to file a claim for compensation. What Is A Torn Ligament?

Ligaments are bands of short, and tough tissue made up of individual fibers. These flexible tissues connect most of the bodyโ€™s bones. Ligaments are elastic, yet limit the overextension or overuse of your bones. A ligament strain occurs when the joint becomes stressed beyond its normal range, and the ligaments become damaged or even tear away from the bone.

Common Torn Tendons And Torn Ligament Injuries

The most common types of areas of torn ligaments occur around the shoulder, knee and ankle joints. The knee and ankle are weight-bearing joints that endure a lot of stress under regular use. When a joint bends in an unnatural direction, ligaments can tear away from the bone. Common types of torn ligament injuries include the following:

Knee Ligament Injuries

  • ACL knee ligament tear
  • PCL knee ligament tear
  • MCL knee ligament tear
  • Superior tibiofibular joint sprain
  • Patella dislocation
  • Posterolateral corner injuries

Shoulder Ligament Injuries

  • AC shoulder joint injury
  • Dislocated shoulder
  • Rotator cuff tears

Hand, Wrist, Arm, And Foot Ligament Injuries

  • Finger Sprain
  • Thumb Sprain
  • Wrist sprain
  • Elbow ligament tears
  • Torn foot ligaments

Neck, Back, And Spine Ligament Injuries

  • Back Sprains
  • Neck sprains and whiplash
  • Back ligament sprain
  • Whiplash neck sprain
  • Texting Neck

The Symptoms Of A Torn Ligament

Have you or a family member been involved in a motor vehicle accident, sports injury, or workplace accident? If so, you may be wondering how your ligament or tendon injuries will affect you in the long run. When a tendon ruptures, most people know immediately because of the excruciating pain. Other times, the severity of the ligament tear is not immediately evident.

When people experience a traumatic motor vehicle or slip and fall accident, shock, and adrenaline may cause them not to feel the full extent of their pain. When the shock wears off, however, many injured people begin to experience pain and difficulties engaging in their everyday work. If you have experienced any of these symptoms, you may be suffering from a torn ligament:

  • Joint instability
  • Impaired function
  • Severe swelling
  • The sudden onset of extreme pain
  • Traumatic injuries

What Is A Torn Or Ruptured Tendon Injury?

Ligaments connect one bone to another bone. Tendons are similar to ligaments, but tendons connect muscles to bone. Like ligaments, tendons are also tough fibers. When diagnosing a tendon injury, some doctors refer to tendonitis, which means โ€œinflammation of the tendon.โ€ Others disagree tendinosis, which indicates many tiny tears in the tendon caused by repetitive overuse.

A tendon rupture is a severe tendon injury. Tendons are extremely tough and can often support up to five times someoneโ€™s body weight. In some cases, however, tendons completely snap or rupture. If untreated, tendon injuries can cause permanent disabilities. Most people know right away when they suffer a tendon rupture because they will feel excruciating pain. Tendon ruptures most commonly occur in the biceps, in the Achilles heel tendon, or in the leg and ankle region.

Achilles Tendon Injuries

The Achilles tendon is a large tendon that connects the heel bone to the calf muscle. Because the ankle sees so much use so frequently, it is often injured or torn. Sometimes, tiny tears in the tendon happen over time and go unnoticed for a while. Many times, however, a blunt force injury, slip, and fall, or sports injury causes a tear in the Achilles tendon.

Recovering From A Tendon Or Ligament Injury Can Be Challenging

If you have torn a tendon, the recovery process can be long and painful. For example, if you have torn your Achilles heel, you likely will not be able to walk on the affected foot for at least several weeks. Many times, doctors recommend resting the tendon until it heals. In some severe cases, surgery may be required to repair a damaged tendon. A surgeon will stitch the ruptured tendon back together. Depending on the patient, the surgeon may have to attach the ruptured tendon to other muscles.

Complications from tendon surgery can include nerve damage and infection. Even if a patient engages in non-surgical treatment, the damaged tendon may never return to its normal function. Many people with rotator cuff ligament injuries require significant physical therapy. Some do not regain the full use of their shoulder or live with substantial daily pain.

personal injury FAQs

Here are some commonly asked questions for personal injury claims

Yes. Ontario’s contributory negligence rules allow claims even if you share some fault. Your compensation may be reduced based on your percentage of responsibility.

Seek medical care, report the incident, collect witness details if possible, and keep copies of medical and expense records. Contacting a lawyer early helps protect your rights.

We work on a contingency basis. You don’t pay upfront, and fees are collected only after your case concludes.

Insurance companies don’t always act in your best interest. Our lawyers ensure your rights are protected and that all available damages are pursued.

Insurance companies often make low offers hoping victims will accept quickly. A lawyer reviews your case to determine whether the offer reflects your losses.

A contingency fee agreement means you do not pay any legal fees upfront. Your lawyer covers the costs of building and pursuing your case. We only collect a pre-agreed percentage of the final amount if we successfully recover compensation for you through a settlement or court award. If we do not win your case, you owe us nothing for our time.

Keeping a simple journal helps track how your injuries affect your daily life. Note your pain levels, medical appointments, missed work or social activities, and any challenges you face with personal care or household chores. This documentation provides powerful evidence to support your claim for pain, suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life.
